Google Sitemaps Process Analysis

Submiting

After creating the sitemap for this website, I've submitted it to the Google webmasters program.

1. The confirmation message sais: You have added a Sitemap to http://www.bubub.org/. Reports may take several hours to update. Thank you for your patience!
2. A few seconds after, almost instantly, googlebot visits my website. As you can see, Googlebot/2.1 fetched only the page header:
   • 66.249.66.82 - - [24/Jun/2007:02:05:55 -0400] "HEAD /sitemap.xml HTTP/1.1" 200 0 "-" "Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Googlebot/2.1; +http://www.google.com/bot.html)"
3. 2 minutes minus 5 seconds later the same crawler retreives the whole sitemap using the GET method:
   • 66.249.66.82 - - [24/Jun/2007:02:07:50 -0400] "GET /sitemap.xml HTTP/1.1" 200 399 "-" "Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Googlebot/2.1; +http://www.google.com/bot.html)"
4. A few hours later, the Webmaster Console notifies me that there is an error within my sitemap. I forgot to place </url> after the last link.
5. Problem solved.
