Ubuntu Linux Flash Does Not Install. Problems with the Adobe Flash Plugin

Filed under: hacks — Crevete @ 2:57 pm

Looks like there’s a problem with the Adobe Flash in Ubuntu. Even though I install it trough Add/Remove… or the Synaptic package manager, Mozilla Firefox still tells me I haven’t got the flash plugin installed. Weird situation. After doing some research on the web I found out that there’s a bug related to flashplugin-nonfree md5 hash value.

This will probably be fixed soon but for now, here is a simple, consistent workaround to this Ubuntu bug:

Download and install the Adobe Flash Player version 9.0.115 manually:

For 32bit/i386 computers: http://fr.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/multiverse/f/flashplugin-nonfree/flashplugin-nonfree_9.0.115.0ubuntu2_i386.deb

For 64bit/amd64 machines: http://launchpadlibrarian.net/10804892/flashplugin-nonfree_9.0.115.0ubuntu2_amd64.deb

Double click the .deb file, you may receive a “early version in the repositories” error, just ignore it and click the green V Install Package button.

Should produce something to the following output:

Selecting previously deselected package flashplugin-nonfree.
(Reading database … 91191 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking flashplugin-nonfree (from …/flashplugin-nonfree_9.0.115.0ubuntu2_i386.deb) …
Setting up flashplugin-nonfree (9.0.115.0ubuntu2) …

Downloading…

Download done.
Flash Plugin installed.

Now everything works, go watch those YouTube videos :)

PS: I’m sorry that this version of Adobe Flash (9.0.115) doesn’t work in Opera. I need to install an older one.
