Unpacking the Ubuntu Linux CD’s

Filed under: reviews — Crevete @ 10:26 pm

Today I have received this wonderful envelope from Canonical LTD with two Ubuntu 7.10 CD’s inside. One for the 32-bit computer and the other for the 64-bit computer. Although by now I have already installed the Ubuntu Operating System on my laptop, these eye-catching seed-ee’s live for another purpose. You see, in the next few days, the information contained within them will spread like a network virus that replicates trough the human mind. It may already have infected my dad who saw them on my desk and could not contain his curiosity. He asked what they are and I explained to him: Free CD’s that contain a Free Computer Operating System called Ubuntu. He smiled and told me that he has yet to see a catch-free gift in his mailbox, he said “All I get is bills and lawsuit citations” then he asked: “Is it from a religious sect?”.

As we discussed on the Linux topic I switched to Gusty Gibbon and showed him around. He didn’t say if he likes it or not, probably because he’s a novice computer user, but one thing he asked me: “How much did we pay for XP?”.

Although I will not install it on his computer right now, the next time “XP” fails he will be glad to have Ubuntu instead.

It’s only a matter of time that my relatives will start using Linux over Windows, mostly because of the financial advantage. The cheapest Vista is $100, but we can compare Ubuntu to the Ultimate version which is about $400. I know the US dollar value is low these days but you can still buy a new computer with that amount of money. My two Ubuntu OS CD’s will show them the way… into err… out of the Matrix.

Without further due ado, here are the unpacking pictures (click to zoom, opens in a new window):

After just one week from placing my order on http://shipit.ubuntu.com/ the package arrived:

The Ubuntu Shipit Envelope Front

There’s a small disclaimer on the back of the envelope explaining the contents, purpose and contact information:

Ubuntu CD's package back

I was pleasantly surprised to find 4 Ubuntu stickers inside too:

The Gusty Gibbon discs 32 and 64 bits and Ubuntu stickers

The eye-catching, question-popping, curiosity-starting Live CD’s that are alive:

The red Ubuntu CD is for x86 while the yellow Ubuntu CD is for ia64

And now it’s time to pimp my Fujitsu Siemens laptop (I wonder how many people will install Ubuntu because of this):

My Ubuntu Laptop Sticker. Before and After animated gif.

Ubuntu melts the ice so fast, there’s no reason to break it…

  8. “US” corporation? You are aware that a corporation only marginally cares about its origins and that profit is more important than origin? One important advantage with Linux is that you win back a little freedom in what you _can_ do. The disadvantage with Microsoft is that they can do what they want and get away with it, like designing an OS like Vista which is worse than XP, and laugh into the face of customers telling them “whatcha gonna do about it ha? switch to linux? omg we gonna sue you!”

  9. My company bought a laptop for me to use to demo a new software product. The product is made to run under Linux, and I am going to carry the laptop around to customers to demo the software. It is a Dell D630 and I put Ubuntu 7.10 on it. I run Windows 2003 server standard on it in a VM since the client runs under Windows. The thing works great. I just wish I had a few of those Ubuntu stickers to stick over the Dell logo.

  10. Yo TED HAMMERS. I’m a Republican, you dipshit, and I use Ubuntu at the office and at home. My wife and kids use it too. My wife got hacked and had identity theft with Windows, and so we made a lifestyle change for the better with Ubuntu.

Also, here’s some logic for you, bone head. Republicans believe in capitalism. Ubuntu is the pure expression of it. Ever been to a car dealership? Ever hear of the concept of giving away something below cost or free to draw the customers in the door? That’s what Ubuntu is. You get a free OS, but you pay for tech support, consulting, and for server add-on products like monitoring, rollout, and management tools. (Yes, there are free support options, other consultants besides Canonical Corp consultants, and other monitoring/rollout/management tools besides the ones that Canonical sells — but this is how Canonical makes its money besides from donations and those who choose to actually purchase the CDs.)

  12. Isn’t it lovely? Free free free. Who wants to pay for an operating system that doesn’t work, is slow and needs the best hardware that is there on the market (which means extra dollars to pay)?
I’ll vote you right away on digg :D
    Cheers,

  14. It’s quite clear, Ted Hammers is working for Billy G., who is the head of a well know Redmond organization, which is a Black OP collaboration between the NSA and the CIA, to spy and control the American People, and enslave the world.

    Fight for freedom!

Long live Ubuntu and all Linux distros

    FREEDOM FREEDOM FREEDOM FREEDOM

  15. Great post, found it from Digg and laughed because I went through something similar with both my father back in ‘98 with Debian GNU/Linux (”Free? I smell a conspiracy!”) and with my boss just a couple of months back (”What’s the catch? I mean really”).

Take care and I’ll see you on the ‘nets ;)

  16. Preferring Ubuntu over Windows is a rational decision in any style economy, capitalist or otherwise. I do believe Ted Hamer is a troll being paid by Microsoft though, as often happens in web forums and in comment areas like here (Microsoft has a whole department whose employees “join” internet discussions and contact the media, effectively as shills for MS products). If Ted Hommer had half a brain he might realize that people from all over the political spectrum are finding Linux a compelling and liberating choice. What all these Linux switchers do have in common is that they are above-average intelligence and know that Linux is the future of computing–they just want to be in on things early!

    Comment by Jake Vines — November 21, 2007 @ 4:57 am

  17. Its kind of funny that even though Ted is probably being paid, he still sounds like a complete idiot and writes in all caps and bad spelling. Really, does MS/whatever really think we will listen to this? They ARE idiots!

    Go Linux!
