Ever wanted to know what blogging platform one website is using? How about the version of the script?
I always wondered what version of WordPress Matt Cutts is using, and I think I’m not the only one. His blog has a lot of traffic and not everybody likes him that much so that’s why the blog is probably a frequent target for WordPress exploits.
By default, WordPress outputs it’s version in the header of every page like this:
<meta name=”generator” content=”WordPress 2.6.2″ /><!– leave this for stats –>
Some webmasters prefer to remove it completly, or just the version numbers. Matt chose to remove the numbering:

But this won’t stop us from determining hacking into his blog, because WordPress also outputs it’s script version in the feeds!
A-HA! We got you now, Mr. Cutts! ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US!
So we click his blog’s feed link and… Drat! He uses FeedBurner!

There’s still hope! FeedBurner doesn’t serve feeds for individual potsts – comments feeds! So we go on one of his lovely off-topic posts and subscribe to the comments! EUREKA!

What a bummer! He’s using the latest version of WordPress ( 2.6.2 ) which has no publicly known exploits.
Anyway, these are some of the easyest methods to find out WordPress versions. Good luck!
